Jakarta (ANTARA) - The G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) encourages the participation of legal professionals, such as advocates and lawyers, to prevent corruption and money laundering.

During the third day of the G20 ACWG here on Wednesday, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) official stated that this encouragement came from the fact that advocates and lawyers oftentimes facilitated the process by aiding corrupters by partaking in money laundering.

"They help by facilitating corruptors to access the finance market and even create a new company to hide the graft money," Hadipratikto noted in a statement on Thursday.

To this end, Hadipratikto proposed that surveillance on regulations and good practices regarding the monitoring of legal professionals' role in graft money laundering should be included within the G20 ACWG compendium.

"The G20 ACWG Compendium is important to monitor regulations and surveillance toward gatekeeping that focuses on professionals in the legal sector," he remarked.

"It also promotes various good practices drawn from the experience of G20 member nations," he noted.

The KPK expects that the compendium can produce comprehensive regulations, so that legal professionals have a better role to play in preventing graft and money laundering, he stated.

Moreover, the third day of the G20 ACWG also discussed the issue concerning the risk of corruption in the management of renewable energy.

Speakers from Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA), U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Center, and C20 were invited during the discussion.

In his material, C20 Chair Dadang Trisasongko outlined three recommendations to the G20 ACWG to handle the risk of corruption in the management of renewable energy.

These three recommendations comprise encouraging discussion on the fossil energy sector within the ACWG priority issues, openness of information in the creation of renewable energy policy, and strengthening renewable energy institutions and regulations.
