The reduction of one sub-district will make North Penajam Paser District no longer qualified to be an autonomous district
N Penajam Paser, E Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The authority of North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan, has urged the central government to allow the formation of new sub-districts following the separation of Sepaku Sub-district to be part of the new capital Nusantara in future.

The current four sub-districts of North Penajam Paser will be reduced to three after Sepaku Sub-district's secession for the new capital, thereby resulting in the district having only three sub-districts of Penajam, Waru, and Babulu, acting district head Hamdan Pongrewa stated on Monday.

According to the prevailing law on administrative division, a district must have at least four sub-districts to allow its establishment as an autonomous district, he noted.

"The reduction of one sub-district will make North Penajam Paser District no longer qualified to be an autonomous district," Pongrewa remarked.

North Penajam Paser District was formed through separation from Paser District in 2002 to form a new autonomous district, he remarked.

The central government's moratorium on the establishment of the new administrative regions, which includes sub-districts and villages, is still in force, the acting district head pointed out.

"The current moratorium on the creation of new administrative regions is still in force. We will ask special permission from the central government to allow the establishment of new sub-districts and villages (in North Penajam Paser)," Pongrewa stated.

The acting district head remarked that North Penajam Paser's Penajam Sub-district will be the candidate to supply a new sub-district for the district, as Penajam Sub-district could be separated into two or three sub-districts to make the district still qualified to be an autonomous region.

Before creating new sub-districts, some villages within subdistricts that would be affected by the modification must be separated first, he added.

Penajam Sub-district has 24 villages, and with the prevailing law on administrative division that necessitates a sub-district to contain a minimum of 10 villages, the sub-district can be divided into two new sub-districts, Pongrewa expounded.
