Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is readying several preparedness agendas as the 2022 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) draws near.

At an online event on Friday, BNPB's Prevention Deputy, Prasinta Dewi, stated that the agency conducted several people response strengthening activities in disaster-prone areas to welcome the event.

These people response strengthening activities comprise early warning instrument installation and the formulation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) as early warning protocols.

Next, the agency formed the Village Disaster Ready team, formulated evacuation plan, and ensured the regions' commitment in sustainability of the program related to stimulus.

Moreover, the agency evaluated policies that address the problem of floods or landslides in a certain region, she noted.

According to Dewi, several disaster incidents cannot be forecast, though there are disasters that occur due to certain processes.

For instance, land use that does not align with allotment can cause land vulnerability that results in landslide or flood.

"The BNPB is not alone. We conduct coordination with other ministries in accordance with their duty and function," Dewi stated.

Other implementation involved the mitigation sector based on vegetation. The agency strives to return the land. For instance, there will be disaster resilient village (destana) activities based on vegetation mitigation.

"For regions with high or medium threat, we conduct vegetation-related activities wherein we take plants that can reduce disaster risk and have economic value," she explained.

Moreover, an early warning system sector activity will be conducted, so that the early warning from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) can be understood and be accepted by the people.

"With this, as soon as a disaster struck, the people know where to evacuate, which route to take, and which evacuation points they should head toward," she noted.

Moreover, for the preparedness sector that emphasizes the pentahelix coordination and role, the agency has a disaster risk reduction forum and several volunteers that can be ready to mitigate disaster together.

These activities were initiated by BNPB's Early Warning Directorate and Preparedness Directorate that had implemented a contingency plan, specifically in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Moreover, the disaster-resilient Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) exhibition and approach to pentahelix along with the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) ensures that when a disaster strikes, hotels can be used for evacuation.
