The presence of BRIN, with the existing resources, is capable of representing Indonesia in biodiversity utilization in an equal standing with other nations
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) called for strengthening research and innovation collaboration between G20 member countries, in biodiversity utilization for instance, at the Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering (RIIG) side event on Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, BRIN head Laksana Tri Handoko informed that RIIG will focus on raising awareness and reaching an agreement on how G20 members can collaborate to utilize biodiversity, based on research collaboration, infrastructure sharing, and equal funding.

The two priority themes of RIIG were chosen out of a desire to create an open platform that can serve as a bridge between G20 members, he explained.

The other reason is the desire to reach collective understanding that can help realize beneficial goals in the world of research and innovation.

According to Handoko, based on the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic that has lasted for almost three years, research collaboration in biodiversity and its utilization can play an important role.

In reality, biodiversity has been individually managed by each party during this time.

"The presence of BRIN, with the existing resources, is capable of representing Indonesia in biodiversity utilization in an equal standing with other nations," he remarked.

Voicing a similar sentiment, BRIN's Earth and Maritime Research Organization head and RIIG co-chair Ocky, Karna Radjasa, said that biodiversity is an important issue.

Several nations have adopted a mix of green and blue digital economies.

To this end, the utilization of biodiversity for the sake of supporting the green and blue economy must also involve a digital platform approach to maximize results.

"In addition, capacity building is also necessary to improve researchers' skills in order to realize the existence of Research Station that points to Research Framework Knowledge Sharing and Technology Transfer," he noted.

Hence, a framework for collaboration between G20 countries is required, he said.
