As the backbone of one-third of Indonesia's economy, millennials and Gen Z in SOEs will always be encouraged to innovate and to develop their characters and skills
Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned enterprises (SOEs) will always encourage young people, millennials, and Generation Z to continue to innovate in order to support economic growth, SOEs Minister Erick Thohir has said.

"As the backbone of one-third of Indonesia's economy, millennials and Gen Z in SOEs will always be encouraged to innovate and to develop their characters and skills," Thohir remarked on his official Instagram account @erickthohir, on Wednesday.

According to the minister, people with quality character and fighting spirit are needed for facing global challenges in the era of digitalization.

"In answering global challenges in the era of digitalization, humans with top-quality character who are hungry to learn and have a high fighting spirit are needed. Together, we are moving toward Golden Indonesia 2045!" he remarked.

Earlier, Thohir had pointed out that skilled and competent human resources can be one of the keys for Indonesia to avoid the middle-income trap.

In addition to the natural resource wealth, the advancement of human resources should be paid attention to, as in the next few years, Indonesia will reap a demographic bonus, he reasoned.

It has been projected that this demographic bonus means that 70 percent of Indonesia's population will be made up of Generation Z, he said.

Generation Z is a productive age, hence, Indonesia will have to rely on changes in the nation's future economic strategies, and these transformations must not only be based on natural resources, but also the application of a knowledge-based economy, which relies on human capabilities and innovation, he added.

"The challenge millennials face is to think positively, that sometimes we think that we are already smart but when we are criticized, we (easily) get angry; it is not good to grow that mindset," Thohir explained.

In response to current challenges, SOEs have changed several work programs for millennials and CSR (corporate social responsibility) efforts, and one of them is awarding 7,700 scholarships every year, he said.
