Even gender equality, which Kartini fought for in the past, is still an issue in various parts of the world today, with the inclusion of gender equality in the Sustainable Development Goals No 5Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat expressed firm belief that Kartini's fight for equality in the past should inspire women to pursue their dreams in the present and the future.
"Even gender equality, which Kartini fought for in the past, is still an issue in various parts of the world today, with the inclusion of gender equality in the Sustainable Development Goals No 5," Moerdijat noted in a written statement here on Thursday.
The MPR deputy chairperson stated that solidarity, consistency, and self-confidence were crucial to achieve gender equality.
Moerdijat likened the women's current condition to seeing through a glass wall, in which they were able to see the opportunities and challenges ahead though were unable to achieve them due to various domestic and cultural challenges hindering them.
"Women must be able to crush the glass wall together, even if it takes sacrifices," she stated.

The MPR deputy chairperson noted that the success of Indonesian women in pushing for the ratification of the Sexual Violence Law should also serve as an important lesson for all women to chase their dreams.
The law, which was initiated in 2016 and eventually ratified in 2022, employed a stance that prioritized the victim's well-being.
Hence, she appealed to Indonesian women to contribute to educating the public in order to provide a thorough and complete understanding of gender equality.
"I hope that the obstacles that arise from the family environment, society, and women themselves can be surmounted over if everyone understands the important role of women in various (aspects)," she remarked.
As per data from the Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry, Indonesia has a total of 64.2 million MSME actors, who contribute 61.07 percent, or Rp8,573.89 trillion, to the gross domestic product (GDP). Of the 64.2 million MSME actors, as many as 64 percent are women. This emphasized the fact that women were vital to the state's economic conditions.
She affirmed that Kartini's fighting spirit should be incessantly emulated, as it would function as a force that drives Indonesian women to stay together, confident, and consistent in fighting for all dreams they harbour.
