Jakarta (ANTARA) - Director of road traffic at the Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Transportation Ministry, Suharto, has appealed to people to maintain traffic safety and health protocols while participating in the Eid Al-Fitr exodus.

A survey conducted by the ministry recently predicted that the number of Eid Al-Fitr travelers this year will reach 85.5 million, he noted during a virtual discussion on Saturday.

According to the survey, five modes of travel will be used the most by travelers: private cars (22.9 million travelers), motorcycles (16.9 million travelers), buses (14.1 million travelers), airplanes (8.9 million travelers), as well as trains (7.6 million travelers), he informed.

"It must be anticipated together, especially considering that people have not been able to carry out Eid Al-Fitr exodus in the last two years," he said.

Furthermore, the government has issued a number of public safety regulations, including making COVID-19 booster vaccinations compulsory, implementing the health protocols, as well as establishing health service posts in a number of public places.

Meanwhile, regarding traffic safety, the director said that his office has carried out ramp checks on 57,693 units of land transportation as well as 215 units of water transportation.

His office has also appealed to people planning to travel in private vehicles to prepare the drivers, vehicles, route, and time arrangements, he added.

In addition, he asked people planning to travel on motorcycles to refrain from long-distance travel and to limit their luggage.

He also asked road operators to prepare special rest areas for motorbikes.

In addition, the ministry, along with the related parties, is also planning to implement traffic engineering to prevent traffic congestion during the peak of homecoming traffic flow from April 28 to May 1, 2022.

"The traffic management scenario for 2022 Eid Al-Fitr will implement a complete package of one-way, odd-even policy, as well as contraflow schemes,” Suharto informed.

This is considering that the number of travelers will increase by 40 percent compared to 2019, he added.

“Hence, according to all the simulations and calculations, the implementation of the traffic management package may be an effective solution (to resolve traffic congestion)," he said.
