Jakarta (ANTARA) - Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the G20 Summit in Bali in November, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated.

"President Putin expressed gratitude for the invitation to the G20 Summit, and he stated that he would attend," the president noted at the Bogor Palace, West Java, as broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Friday.

The 17th G20 Summit, with attendees comprising heads of state and governments of G20 member countries, will take place in November 2022 in Bali.

The summit will be the peak of the G20 process and intense work conducted within the Ministerial Meetings, Working Groups, and Engagement Groups throughout the year.

President Jokowi said that he and Russian President Putin had engaged in a telephonic conversation on Thursday (April 28) at 7 p.m. local time.

"The Russian president provided an update on the situation in Ukraine, including the ongoing negotiation process between Russia and Ukraine," he noted.

Jokowi also re-emphasized the importance of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

"I also emphasize that a peaceful solution should continue to be put forward, and Indonesia is ready to contribute to the efforts for peace," he added.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday (April 27), at 3:00 local time, the president telephonically invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the G20 Summit.

Ukraine is not a member of the G20. However, earlier G20 leaders have invited other countries as guests to attend the meeting.

The G20 condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which is currently in its ninth week. The invasion has increased geopolitical tensions, threatened the global economy, and caused a humanitarian crisis.

Several G20 members have also called for the removal of Russia and President Vladimir Putin from the G20 summit attendance list. However, Indonesia refused the plea and said it was too early to decide on that.
