Kediri, East Java (ANTARA) - A fireworks explosion in Blaru Village, Badas Sub-district, Kediri District, East Java, caused injuries to five residents, who are currently under medical care at a local hospital, the local police stated.

"(The explosion) caused injuries to five residents. Four residents are currently under medical care due to burns, while another one, with minor injury, has also been taken to a local hospital," Kediri Police head Adjunct Senior Commissioner Agung Setyo Nugroho noted here on Saturday.

The fireworks explosion occurred on Friday (Apr 29) at a house, whose owner is identified as Bowo, he remarked, adding that the house was damaged by the explosion.

Police officers, after being notified about the accident, promptly arrived at the accident site and sealed the area with a police line for further investigation, Nugroho stated.

The police suspected that the house was used illegally by one of the residents to produce fireworks, as construction of the house was incomplete, and the homeowner is yet to occupy the house, he noted.

Residents injured during the explosion have received intensive care at Kediri's Bhayangkara Hospital, Nugroho stated.

He said that the accident at Blaru Village was the second to have occurred in recent weeks. Several days earlier, a child, identified by the initials as DA, from Blabak Village, Kandat Sub-district, Kediri, suffered a finger injury due to a fireworks explosion, he noted.

The district police head remarked that DA had undergone surgery at Kediri's SLG Hospital and will remain under medical care at the hospital until recovery.

Residents illegally producing fireworks can be charged under Article 1, Paragraph (1) of Emergency Law No. 12 of 1951, Nugroho remarked.
