"The audit of stunting cases does not only focus on the audit of (stunting) cases in children under two and children under five (years)," Head of BKKBN Hasto Wardoyo noted in a written statement received by ANTARA here on Tuesday.
Wardoyo explained that the focus is directed at efforts to prevent infants from being born stunted, starting from the audit of prospective brides, pregnant, or postpartum women and of children under two and those under five, who are at risk of stunting.
Wardoyo noted that the coaching, on May 23-24, is segregated into three provinces to facilitate and assist districts and cities in conducting stunting case audits.
"This is because the handling of stunting cases requires regular and adequate data surveillance as the basis for case selection and study," he remarked.
In addition to supporting the selection of stunting cases, auditing stunting cases can open opportunities for consultation and coordination among policymakers, program implementers, and experts regarding activities.
Professional organizations that are partaking in the audit of stunting cases are the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI), Indonesian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (POGI), Indonesian Nutrition Higher Education Association (AIPGI), and Indonesian Psychologists Association (Himpsi).
According to Wardoyo, the audit is not conducted on all groups that are at risk of stunting but by the selection of cases that need expert consideration or advice.
"However, recommendations given by experts on similar cases in other regions can be used as a reference for intervention," he remarked.
To support the smooth running of audits, the BKKBN has also formed special teams to accelerate stunting reduction starting from provincial to village levels.
The BKKBN head called for improving several aspects in the stunting case audit, including the coverage and quality of routine surveillance and family assistance or specific and sensitive services to target groups that should be monitored together with the head of the Stunting Reduction Acceleration Team.
