Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Head Lieutenant General Suharyanto chaired a plenary meeting on various issues that will be emphasized during the mid-term review of the Sendai Framework on Thursday.

The meeting was part of the 7th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) that took place in Nusa Dua, Badung District, Bali Province, on May 25-28, 2022.

It was the first meeting of the government, non-government, and UN agencies, as well as civil organization representatives to evaluate the application of the Sendai Framework.

The plenary meeting focused on developing global financing mechanisms for disaster risk reduction programs.

The agency head chaired the meeting along with the Special Representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction Mami Mizutori.

In his remarks, Suharyanto pointed out that disaster risk reduction attempts and financial planning were not well-integrated.

He assessed that investment in disaster risk reduction attempts was quite difficult to be implemented, for instance, due to the lack of stakeholders’ understanding on the impact of disasters.

Meanwhile, Mizutori stated that the result of the meeting would be an important input for the mid-term evaluation of the Sendai Framework.

The Sendai Framework was the first agreement made after the post-2015 development agenda. It focuses on strengthening global commitments and actions to reduce disaster risk. The agreement has been in effect since 2015, and its targets are expected to be met by 2030.

Currently, the framework has been agreed upon by more than 180 countries, including Indonesia.

Results of the plenary meeting will be reported at the end of the 7th Session of the GPDRR as well as at the High-Level Meeting on the Sendai Framework Mid-Term Evaluation in New York, the United States, on May 18-19, 2023.

The 7th Session of the GPDRR was officially inaugurated by Indonesian President Joko Widodo along with UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed, President of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid, UN Resident Coordinator for Indonesia Valerie Julliand, and the special representative of the UN for disaster risk reduction, as well as several Indonesian officials on May 25, 2022.
