The President's view will surely become an input for the DPR Commission II to consider during the decision-making process. I think other factions at the DPR and the home affairs minister will fully consider the President's view.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives' (DPR's) Commission II will consider President Joko Widodo's view to cut short the 2024 general election campaign period to 90 days.

"The President's view will surely become an input for the DPR Commission II to consider during the decision-making process. I think other factions at the DPR and the home affairs minister will fully consider the President's view," Deputy Chairman of the DPR Commission II Yanuar Prihatin stated here on Tuesday.

He noted that two options pertaining to the duration of the 2024 election campaign period , specifically 75 days and 90 days, were brought up at the recent meeting of the DPR Commission II, General Election Commission (KPU), and Home Affairs Ministry.

According to Prihatin, the KPU was ordered to conduct simulation if the election campaign period lasts for 75 days.

"The KPU should explain (the reason behind) the 75-day election campaign duration, what is the obstacle, what is the difficulty, and what is the risk to emerge," he stated.

The DPR Commission II has not received the result of KPU's simulation that will be brought to a hearing next week for discussion.

Hence, the DPR Commission II had yet to decide whether the duration of the 2024 election campaign period will be 90 days or 75 days, he remarked.

Prihatin noted that the DPR Commission II had to take into account several factors, including efficiency and effectiveness, in order to decide on the election campaign period.

"On top of that, it must consider efforts to minimize potentials for dispute, rivalry and even conflict due to the long duration of the election campaign period," he remarked.

At a meeting with KPU on Monday (May 30, 2022), President Joko Widodo suggested that the duration of the election campaign period be shortened to make it more efficient without causing prolonged problems in the community. The 2019 general election campaign period had reached almost seven months.
