Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - At least 233 houses have suffered light to severe damage on account of recent strong winds in Aceh Province, the Aceh Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBA) has reported.

The homes were damaged not only by strong winds but also falling trees, BPBA acting head Ilyas said in Banda Aceh on Friday.

"(Some areas) in Aceh are still on alert, with potential for strong winds amid the uncertain weather conditions," he added.

Extreme weather in the form of heavy rain accompanied by strong winds has prevailed in Aceh since Saturday (May 28, 2022), he informed.

According to Ilyas, the roofs of many houses in Aceh province were also blown away by strong winds, and buildings were crushed by falling trees.

Of the 233 damaged housing units, 64 were seriously damaged, 41 were moderately damaged, and 128 units were mildly damaged, the agency noted.

"Meanwhile, the total number of victims was 151 people from 82 households spread across 12 districts/cities in Aceh," he informed.

In Langsa city, 17 houses were heavily damaged, 11 were fairly damaged, and 13 were lightly damaged by strong winds, he said. In Gayo Lues, two housing units were seriously damaged and three were mildly damaged.

Furthermore, in Sabang city, four houses suffered heavy damaged due to the extreme weather, while three were lightly damaged.

Meanwhile, in Banda Aceh city, nine houses were heavily damaged and one unit was fairly damaged.

"In Aceh Besar district, there are also four dayah (Islamic boarding schools) seriously damaged and one elementary school building that was mildly damaged," Ilyas said.

Earlier, the Aceh Besar Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG's) data and information coordinator, Zakaria Ahmad, had warned of the potential for strong winds in Aceh in the next three days, although wind speeds have been slightly lower compared to the past few days, when they reached 100 km/hour.
