Transportation infrastructure development is focused on electric vehicles, green ports and airports, as well as electric trains.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has urged the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to provide climate and weather information more quickly and accurately to improve national transportation safety.

“BMKG's support is very important in providing early warning information on the weather. If the data can be obtained quickly and accurately in real-time, it is expected to improve inter-regional, inter-island, and inter-national transportation safety," he said at the 2022 BMKG national coordination meeting on Monday.

Considering the uncertain climate change caused by global warming, more accurate weather forecasts are greatly necessary, he noted.

Hence, his ministry has prepared several policies and made mitigation efforts by developing sustainable transportation.

“Transportation infrastructure development is focused on electric vehicles, green ports and airports, as well as electric trains,” he said.

The effort is expected to improve air quality and realize environmentally-friendly development, he added.

Furthermore, the ministry, BMKG, and several stakeholders have made a number of efforts to improve the reliability of weather information services in the transportation sector.

For instance, the System of Indonesian Aviation (SIAM) has been implemented to provide the latest weather information through a single-service platform.

Meanwhile, in the marine transportation sector, the Warning Receiver System New Generation (WRS NG) has been installed to expedite the detection and dissemination of earthquake and tsunami information.

In addition, the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) has been helping monitor shipping traffic.

"In the future, it will be important to continue to develop the standardization and integration of meteorology, climatology, and geophysics (MKG) data according to the needs of each transportation mode," the minister said.

On the same occasion, BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati stated that the agency will continue to improve the capacity of its human resources to provide excellent MKG information services.

"We will continue to build and maintain public trust by providing reliable and trustworthy MKG services through the application of information technology," she added.

The coordinating meeting was themed “Excellent Human Resources and Service to Support Indonesia's Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Transformation.”
