An earthquake of magnitude (M) 5.8 hit on Wednesday (June 8) at 2:32 p.m. Central Indonesian Standard Time (WITA, which is UTC+8) at coordinates 2.77 degrees south latitude and 118.56 degrees east longitude.
According to a statement received here on Thursday, the BNPB head was scheduled to hold a meeting with the West Sulawesi provincial government at the governor's office to conduct a coordination meeting on the acceleration of disaster mitigation attempts.
After the meeting, he will visit the affected locations to directly obtain information on the required necessities during the emergency period.
Suharyanto is also scheduled to disburse ready-to-use funding and logistics assistance to the provincial government.
According to the website of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake was sensed at Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) V in South Sulawesi Province in Mamuju District and MMI IV in Majene District.
In addition, shocks of MMI III were felt by people in South Sulawesi Province in Pinrang District, while shocks of MMI II were sensed in Makassar City, Palopo City, and Masamba Sub-district.
Some 7,650 residents of Majene District took shelter on account of the disaster. They set up refugee tents at several locations, such as in the courtyard of Deking Mosque and the Kota Tinggi Vocational High School.
Meanwhile, the people in Mamuju District evacuated to the office of the head of Mamuju District, the local office of the state-owned television broadcaster TVRI, as well as Mamuju Stadium.
Meanwhile, based on data of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) of West Sulawesi Province, as many as 17 residents were injured by falling debris from a building.
Currently, the victims were receiving intensive treatment at the Mamuju Bhayangkara Hospital.
