Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is teaming up with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for developing an earthquake and tsunami early warning system.

Development of the early warning system is part of the Project of Capacity Development for the Implementation of Climate Change Strategies that serves as a form of cooperation between JICA and several agencies, including BMKG.

Hopefully, the cooperation project would help BMKG to develop technically its human resources and facilities related to the earthquake and tsunami early warning system, BMKG Chief Dwikorita Karnawati stated as quoted on the BMKG official website on Saturday.

In fact, both sides signed a cooperation agreement to that effect on January 25, 2018. They held a meeting on Thursday (June 9, 2022) to follow up on the agreement.

Karnawati remarked that cooperation between BMKG and JICA in the climatological field is aimed at preparing a climate projection to lay a scientific basis for formulating policies by appointing the BMKG deputy for climatology and chief of climate change center as a focal point.

One of the clauses in the cooperation agreement stipulates that equipment from Japan used for the project will belong to Indonesia at the end of the cooperation through a grant mechanism.

In the geophysical field, both sides are focusing on developing an earthquake and tsunami early warning system.

In addition, the cooperation includes JICA scholarships for six employees of the Office of BMKG Deputy Head for Geophysics to pursue higher education for S-2 degree in Japan. (INE)
