Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) urged state-owned housing company Perum Perumnas to increase the construction of vertical housing or flats for the community, especially for low-income households (MBR).

"Perum Perumnas is one of the work partners of the PUPR Ministry that plays an important role in building houses for the community. We hope that Perumnas would continue to improve the construction of flats for the community in the regions," Director General of Housing at the ministry Iwan Suprijanto noted in a release here on Wednesday.

Suprijanto expressed optimism that the construction of flats that are integrated with mass transportation modes would encourage the achievement of the One Million Houses Program while providing decent and affordable housing for the community.

He explained that Perum Perumnas could cooperate with various ministries and agencies that have potential land in regions and big cities in Indonesia.

Verification, cooperation, and a good concept of residential development are considered to draw the people's interest to opt for development projects implemented by Perum Perumnas.

"Perumnas needs to conduct a field and market potential analysis as well as consider the benefits of the residential development plan," he explained.

He noted that the development of flats could also optimize the use of existing land, and Perumnas can strive to draw the interest of the wider community to reside in the flats.

Hence, Perumnas can develop a residential concept that is integrated with mass transportation modes or Transit Oriented Development (TOD).

He noted that currently, the community desperately needs housing, with easy and affordable transportation access.

"The younger generation must also learn to live in flats that were built with the TOD concept. Easy access to transportation will help mobilize the community," he stated.

Meanwhile, President Director of Perum Perumnas Budi Saddewa Soediro spoke of his side having currently conducted several surveys of the location of potential lands belonging to government agencies that are considered suitable for vertical residential development.

However, he expressed hope that various parties would extend support, so that the concept of TOD-based residential development conducted by Perumnas in several areas can be implemented properly.

"We are ready to build TOD-based flats to help the community to occupy decent and affordable housing," he remarked.
