Jakarta (ANTARA) - The manufacturing sector experienced the largest export decline in May 2022 due to palm oil export restrictions, Deputy for Distribution Statistics and Services at Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Setianto informed at a press conference here on Wednesday.

“The sector, which had the largest month-on-month (m-o-m), decline is the manufacturing sector, with a decline of 25.92 percent,” he said.

Palm oil exports to India fell 100 percent in May 2022 to zero US dollars compared to US$376.60 million (Rp5.57 trillion) in April 2022, he informed.

Meanwhile, palm oil exports to Pakistan fell by 90.17 percent to US$21.90 million (Rp324.2 billion) from US$222.80 million (Rp3.3 trillion) the previous month.

The value of Indonesia's exports in May 2022 reached US$21.51 billion (Rp318.4 trillion) — a decrease of 21.29 percent m-o-m, Setianto noted.

Nevertheless, compared to exports in May 2021, the figure showed an increase of 27 percent.

The official said that the decline in exports in May was seen in almost all sectors, including manufacturing; agriculture, forestry, and fisheries; as well as mining.

The value of agricultural exports fell by 25.92 percent due to a decline in shipments of swallow bird nests and herbal plants.

The mining sector also experienced a decline of 12.92 percent due to a drop in the export value of copper ore and lignite.

“The export of oil and gas sector was the only one which increased in May 2022 — with rise of 4.38 percent,” Setianto said.

The increase was driven by rising exports of crude oil and gas.

In addition, other commodities whose exports increased included nickel, woven materials, beverages, alcohol, vinegar, matches, fireworks, and explosives.

Indonesia enjoyed the largest increase in exports to China, the United States, and Singapore.

On the same occasion, Setianto informed that Indonesia recorded a trade surplus for the 25th consecutive month in May. The total surplus for the month was pegged at US$2.90 billion (Rp42.93 trillion).
