It is also useful for the management of toll roads
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono, confirmed that his side will increase the number of parking lots in toll road rest areas to prevent major traffic jams, especially during the long holidays.

"We will increase the number of parking lots in the rest area, especially to accommodate the load of vehicles during the long holidays," Hadimuljono noted during a meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) regarding the evaluation of infrastructure implementation and transportation for the 2022 Eid al-Fitr homecoming in Jakarta, Monday.

The minister remarked that the parking lot will be built in the land around the toll road rest area, which will be used as a reserve for land availability or a land bank.

Thus, the government can use the land bank as public infrastructure, such as a parking lot, on certain days to prevent traffic congestion.

Hadimuljono confirmed to have received approval to develop additional parking lots in the toll road rest area, including in the Jakarta-Merak toll road.

"We would develop additional parking lots on the Jakarta-Merak toll road to reduce the congestion of vehicles headed to Merak and Bakauheni. Yesterday, I have met with the Banten governor, and we have prepared a five-hectare plot of land for the parking lot," he remarked.

Meanwhile, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that his side also requested additional toll road rest areas to be prepared as an additional alternative during traffic congestion in the holiday period.

"It is also useful for the management of toll roads," Sumadi noted.

Earlier, Sumadi noted that one of the evaluation results pertaining to the 2022 Eid holiday was regarding the homecoming and return flow at Merak Port where a rest area was required for vehicles before crossing to Sumatra Island.

"We would open one parking lot at the rest area to accommodate vehicles before crossing to Sumatra from Merak Port. Besides that, we would also request for road widening and the bridge in the long term," Sumadi remarked.
