Innovation and collaboration are very important in addressing the plastic waste issue
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia constantly encourages efforts to reduce plastic waste, including through collaboration between the government and private entities, to improve waste management.

This is apparent from the joint efforts by the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment, Malang Government, and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste.

According to Alliance's written statement, received here on Thursday, the partnership resulted in a program titled "Clean Indonesia: Eliminate Plastic Waste," which was announced during the 2022 United Nation Ocean Conference hosted from June 27 to July 1, 2022.

"Innovation and collaboration are very important in addressing the plastic waste issue. The Clean Indonesia Program must be able to incorporate the waste management model with the circular economy principle, as well as facilitate the ecosystem in the downstream," Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, stated.

He credited those two aspects as a means to garner a new method of funding by getting the most out of materials, such as glass, paper, metal, and plastic.

Indonesia has set a national target in terms of plastic waste reduction. It aims to push it down by 70 percent in 2025 and reduce plastic pollution to zero by 2040.

The program is aimed at promoting the efforts to reuse, reduce, and recycle plastic waste in Indonesia. The program is expected to demonstrate a financially-sustainable waste management model that can be applied in developing countries.

According to the plan, the program will be implemented in the three districts of Malang, Magelang, and Sukabumi in Java, so it could facilitate some 6.5 million people. The Clean Indonesia Program kicked off in Malang, East Java, after being launched on May 18, 2022.

The three systems, at fullest capacity, are expected to collect more than 800 thousand tons of waste from the city, recycle some 140 thousand tons of plastic waste annually, and create eight thousand jobs.
