Ambon, Maluku (ANTARA) - Floods and landslides have been reported in several parts of Ambon, Maluku province, following incessant and heavy rainfall since Monday, according to the Ambon City Regional Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD).

"Quite high rainfall since Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.–12.30 p.m. WIT (Eastern Indonesian Standard Time) resulted in a number of locations being affected by floods and landslides in three sub-districts in Ambon city," Ambon BPBD head Demy Paays informed on Tuesday.

The office recorded flooding in eight different areas and landslides in five areas.

Floods submerged at least 25 homes, affecting 31 families comprising 135 people.

Landslides damaged several homes and affected 11 families consisting of 45 people.

The local authorities collected data on the damaged buildings and provided assistance in the form of carts, shovels, tarpaulins, and sacks to families to clean their homes.

Ambon city residents have been urged to remain vigilant as disasters can occur anytime or anywhere owing to the rainfall intensity, which is estimated to continue to increase.

BPBD has asked people living on mountain slopes and riverbanks to always be alert and pay attention to appeals or information issued by the government through mass and social media.

The community has also been asked to immediately report disasters to the BPBD through local neighborhood coordinators.

"Reports and complaints from citizens can also be submitted through the website www.lapor.go.id, or via SMS to 1708, or type AMBON (space) ISI MESSAGE, send to 08114706999," Paays said.
