Bitung, North Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The National Health Insurance (JKN) program is targeted to cover 98 percent of the Indonesian population by 2024, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture (Kemenko PMK) has said.

"BPJS Kesehatan (state-owned healthcare and social security agency) has been tasked with providing protection to the participants to get the benefits of health services to fulfill their basic health needs through the JKN program," the ministry's deputy for social welfare improvement, Andi Megantara, said at an event entitled "54 Years BPJS Kesehatan Presents Across the Country" here on Tuesday.

Megantara expressed the hope that the benefits of the JKN program would be felt by the poor community in the country.

"That is why the JKN program was prepared as a national strategic program, and we are committed to continuing this JKN program," the deputy remarked.

He said the BPJS Kesehatan program is being implemented under Article 34 Paragraph 2 of the 1945 Constitution, which mandates the state to develop a social security system for the entire community and empower the vulnerable and underprivileged people in the country.

According to Megantara, BPJS Kesehatan is currently providing health security services to as many as 241.7 million Indonesian citizens who are registered as participants of the JKN program.

Therefore, the presence of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture in Bitung city, North Sulawesi, is aimed at ensuring that health services run well across the country, including in the city, he said.

The “54 Years BPJS Kesehatan Presents Across the Country” event in Bitung was attended by the Mayor of Bitung, Maurits Mantiri; Deputy Mayor of Bitung, Hengky Honandar; director of human resources and general affairs for BPJS Kesehatan, Dr. Andi Afdal; and regional deputies and branch offices' heads of BPJS Kesehatan, as well as other officials and invitees.
