Bantul, Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry and the Atma Nusantara Jati (Atsanti) Foundation have announced the National Music Innovation Competition (Linmtara) to encourage youngsters to preserve traditional music.

"Linmtara is a music competition to encourage the younger generations to love the wealth of Indonesian music more through a creative, innovative, and contemporary concept, without leaving the nation's cultural identity behind," Head of the Linmtara organizing committee Setyawan Jayantoro said at a press conference here on Tuesday.

The program has been implemented by the Directorate of Film, Music, and Media of the ministry since 2021, he informed. Registrations for the 2022 Linmtara will be open from July 1 to September 24, 2022.

In 2021, 242 groups from 29 provinces and 120 cities and districts of Indonesia took part in the competition. The top 25 participants advanced to the final round to compete for a place in the top 10.

"It showed the enthusiasm of the community, especially the younger generation in participating to develop traditional music through various promising creativities," the committee head remarked.

He said he is optimistic that Linmtara has strong potential to become popular among youngsters when it comes to appreciating Indonesian traditional music through an educational competition.

"The competition also includes a series of intensive educative activities, such as workshops, discussions through thematic podcasts with artists, as well as mentoring of the top 25 participants,” he said.

The 10 best works will be announced at the closing event of the 2022 Linmtara Program at Borobudur Temple, Magelang District, Central Java Province, on October 10, he informed.

Chairperson of the Atsanti Foundation Nilo Wardhani said that the implementation of the Linmtara program is intended to strengthen Indonesia’s attempts, as a great country, to continue exploring the spiritual values of its national culture.

"Through the event, the younger generation of Indonesia can be encouraged to actualize the richness and diversity of Indonesian traditional music as creative material for making a work that reflects the nowadays spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Indonesia’s national motto; means ‘unity in diversity’)," she said.

Meanwhile, one of the judges for the 2022 Linmtara, Singgih Sanjaya, said that he expects the event to increase the production of creative music works as well as optimize the development and utilization of the works.
