Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) - Flight operations at Soekarno-Hatta Airport were not disrupted by smoke from a fire that razed a nearby plastic pipe factory on Friday, the airport's acting senior manager for communication and legal, Candra Ananda, informed.

"Operationally, there is no problem; the flights are still safe because (flight) visibility has not been disturbed at all," Ananda said in Tangerang on Friday.

The current visibility conditions are still within safe limits for operating flights, he added.

The fire that ravaged the factory near the Soekarno-Hatta Airport also did not affect the runways or terminals, he said.

"Both runways are still in use. So far, it is still safe; it has no impact on flights at Soekarno-Hatta Airport," he said.

It was reported earlier that a plastic pipe manufacturing factory located on Perancis main road, Kosambi sub-district, Tangerang, Banten, had caught fire around 1:30 p.m. local time on Friday.

It is believed that a pile of cardboard lying around the factory caught fire due to a short circuit , the Tangerang district’s Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) post commander, Oni Syahroni, said in Tangerang.

"According to the factory, the cause of the fire was due to the short circuit and under it, there were flammable boxes," he added.

The Tangerang district’s BPBD team deployed five fire trucks and 25 personnel to put out the fire.

"It seems that (to extinguish the fire) in this plastic pipe (factory) takes a long time, but we are trying to attack the fire spots," he said.

Due to the fire, thick smoke flew high and was estimated to reach the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport area, he added.

Therefore, he said his team would use special materials to extinguish the fire.
