Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian team netted two gold and two bronze medals at the 33rd International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in 2022 held in Yerevan, Armenia, an official of the National Achievement Center confirmed.

"This year's IBO was the first face-to-face setting after two consecutive years of being held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We give the highest honor to the medalists," acting head of the National Achievement Center, Asep Sukmayadi, stated here on Tuesday.

The gold medals were secured by Gregorius Tendi, a 12th-grade student of Santo Yakobus High School of Jakarta, and Michael Purnama, a 11th-grade student of St. Louis 1 Christian High School of Surabaya.

Indonesian students bagging bronze medals were Sherly Anastasia, a 11th-grade student of Petra 1 Christian High School of Surabaya and Jefferson Filbert Tjoenardi, a 12th-grade student of Petra 2 Christian High School of Surabaya.

The 33rd IBO in 2022 was held in Yerevan City, Armenia, on July 8-18, 2022, with 62 participating countries. Each country sends a maximum of four student representatives. At least 240 students from all over the world participated in the competition this year.

Implementation of the 2022 IBO was divided into two segments: the practicum test and the theory test, with an assessment composition of 50:50.

Each test is 90 minutes long, with four topics -- biochemistry (enzyme activity test); plant anatomy and physiology (photosynthetic reactions and plant adaptation processes); zoology and systematics (identification of typical Armenian fish species); and bioinformatics (cell signaling) -- being included in the practicum test.

"The Indonesian Biology Olympiad team would like to thank the National Achievement Center, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, who were responsible for the competition and selection (process) starting from the district/city, provincial, to the national level in 2021," Ahmad Faizal, one of the students' mentor, explained.
