We will seek common ground and agreement on global joint data governance.
Labuan Bajo, NTT (ANTARA) - The 3rd Meeting of the 2022 G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) discussed cross-border data governance and reliable free data flow, among other topics, Communication and Informatics Minister, Johnny G. Plate, has informed.

The DEWG is one of the working groups of the G20 that focuses on issues related to the digital economy and highlights the role of digital transformation on economic and social growth.

"The discussion on the issues will become more essential since the international community increasingly needs applicable data management based on common views, approaches, and practices -- a condition which has not been fulfilled," the minister stated at a press conference on the meeting here on Wednesday.

The world cannot avoid a future that involves heavy reliance on data by various public and private institutions, he noted.

Hence, the development of cross-border data governance will need to pay attention to various important principles of justice, legality, transparency, and reciprocity.

The implementation of the principles will not only encourage the recovery of the global economy, but also the establishment of concrete and comprehensive collaborations to accommodate the development of digital innovation.

"The issue does not only concern developing countries, but also developed countries and poor countries," Plate said.

Without proper and inclusive data governance, data utilization will not run equitably, hence it is possible that data will become a limited commodity, resulting in group-based data utilization, he emphasized.

"Ideally, data utilization must benefit all parties," he remarked.

Further discussions on data utilization, including data security, will be conducted on the second day of the meeting, that is, on Thursday (July 21, 2022), he informed.

"We will seek common ground and agreement on global joint data governance," he added.

The 3rd DEWG meeting is taking place in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai district, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, from July 20 to 22.

The meeting is being attended in person by 17 delegates from G20 nations. Meanwhile, delegates from Italy, Argentina, and China are participating in the meeting virtually.
