Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police (Polri) is striving to achieve the ideal proportion of female police officers, which is 30 percent of the total police force, to realize gender equality in the law enforcement institution.

"Every year, the National Police opens recruitment. Yesterday, it was opened for upper non-commissioned officers (Bintara), as well as the police academy, and for undergraduates. We strive to achieve the expected ideal number," a state functional apparatus at the National Police's School of Staff and Leaders Inspector General Juansih said.

Speaking after a social service program commemorating the 74th anniversary of the Female Police, here on Tuesday, she said so far, the proportion of female police officers has not reached six percent of the total police force, which is 450 thousand.

"(The number has) not yet reached 6 percent, but the number of female police officers is already around 25,700 more," she said.

The low number of female police officers is one of the challenges faced by the National Police when it comes to realizing gender equality.

The 74th anniversary of the Female Police has offered a momentum to strengthen the role of female police, both in terms of number and quality, Juansih said.

"On this 74th anniversary, the (quality) of female police is not ideal yet, but we strive to increase the quantity and quality," the two-star general said.

The commitment to increase the role and number of female police was also conveyed by National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo on December 31, 2021.

Prabowo said the issue of gender equality is often a problem in various parts of the world. Therefore, the National Police is committed to providing opportunities for men and women personnel to rise to the position of inspector general.

Based on Polri data, there were three female police officers holding high-ranking positions, such as brigadier general and inspector general, during 2019–2021.
