Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung (ANTARA) - The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) will add 74 speed boats that can travel at 36 knots to improve search and rescue services for accident victims at sea.

These boats are expected to arrive in 2023, Head of Basarnas Vice Marshal Henri Alfiandi noted here on Monday.

These 36-knot speed boats are capable of navigating through level 5 or five-meter waves and can address Basarnas' challenge in improving services to the people, he said.

Basarnas' challenge involves managing the government-provided fund as optimally as possible for the provision of rescue equipment and requirement, he explained.

"The addition of these boats necessitates a large fund and ordering them takes quite some time," he remarked.

Based on the survey result, the search and rescue equipment in Bangka Belitung's Basarnas are already complete. However, they are not yet adequate, thereby slowing workers down in their efforts to provide service.

"The goods exist and can be covered, but it takes some time for the delivery of other goods in the regional posts," Alfiandi remarked.

In addition to speed boats, in the near future, the agency will add 20 diving equipment units to optimize the handling of boat accidents in the river and sea in Bangka Belitung Province.

"The diving equipment existing here had yet to be adequate to provide service to the people," he pointed out.

The addition of rescue equipment is adjusted on the basis of Basarnas' requirement across Indonesia to improve service to the people.

"All Basarnas staff in their respective posts already know how to dive, so they do not need to wait for diving equipment if there are accidents in the water," he explained
