Jakarta (ANTARA) - Spokesperson for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Handling Wiku Adisasmito stated that the domestic FMD vaccine production capacity in 2023 could increase to 30 million doses.

"Domestic FMD vaccine production involves the government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, and the private sector," Adisasmito noted in Jakarta, Friday.

He affirmed that the government was intensifying the production of domestic FMD vaccines based on viral stereotypes circulating in Indonesia.

In 2022, Indonesia has a vaccine production capacity of two million doses that is targeted to continue to increase until 2023, he noted.

Adisasmito remarked that the procurement of domestically produced FMD vaccines was a manifestation of the nation's independence.

"The government fully supports and prioritizes domestic vaccines as an effort to support the health of animals prone to FMD," he remarked.

He said several local companies had expressed interest in producing FMD vaccines: the Center for Veterinary Farma (Pusvetma), PT Caprifarmindo, PT Biotis Prima Agrisindo, PT Medion, and PT Vaccido Satwa Nusantara.

In June 2022, the government approved the use of funds from the Committee for Handling COVID-19 and the National Economic Recovery (KPCPEN) for the procurement of 29 million doses of this year's FMD vaccine. This included bringing in imported vaccines from four countries: China, France, Brazil, and Argentina.

Adisasmito ensured that vaccine procurement will be conducted professionally with a clear, transparent, and accountable process under the main supervision and control of the Ministry of Agriculture.

For the initial stage, the government distributed three million doses of FMD vaccine that is divided into two phases, specifically 800 thousand doses that have been distributed and injected to livestock and followed by some 2.2 million doses that are being distributed and started to be administered to livestock. The vaccination is targeted to be completed by September 2022.

Based on data from the official site of the FMD crisis center as of August 18, 2022, the number of livestock to have been vaccinated reached 1,522,006.

So far, no new cases of FMD were found in five provinces: Bali, South Kalimantan, South Sumatra, Jakarta, and Riau Islands.
