For BMKG, the climate change phenomenon has resulted in extreme conditions, thereby causing spikes in extraordinary events, she noted during the "Extreme Event and Climate Change" online scientific seminar on Tuesday.
The BMKG recorded 70 extreme events that occurred within the last two to three years as a result of climate change. In addition, cyclone incidents also frequently occurred.
According to Karnawati, routine works undertaken in accordance with the standard operating procedure are not sufficient.
The agency should bolster its capacity, whether its analytics capability, big data, and equipment, for early detection of natural phenomenon and to project future events.
"To this end, we should improve and bolster the network, system, and cooperation with various parties, including with experts, atmosphere experts, and climate experts in Indonesia," she remarked.
"Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), many universities are delving into these subjects," she remarked.
Extreme weather phenomenon is an extraordinary event since it occurs quickly, Karnawati explained.
To this end, the agency should be more frequent in conducting data communication with experts, including through the scientific seminar, to establish synergy.
According to Karnawati, if the data has been synergized, it can prevent catastrophic events or major disasters in the event of extreme weather.
"This becomes our benchmark for success. Even if data owners are resting or sleeping, the alarm has sounded, and the warning would already be sent across before the event occurs," she explained.
At a G20 Side Event on July 15, Bank Indonesia (BI) Deputy Governor Juda Agung noted that mitigating the impacts of extreme weather could cost up to 40 percent of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2050.
