"The BPBD of Mentawai Islands District has gone down to resume monitoring. As for the current situation, it is safe and under control. If there is any development (in terms) of information on the field, it will be updated regularly," Acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari stated here.
Muhari said that the Mentawai Islands BPBD team has conducted field assessment and coordination with relevant parties.

"The results of the initial assessment showed minor damage to buildings on Siberut Island in the form of cracks in the walls and some parts of the ceiling. Until now, there have been no reports of casualties," he remarked.
Earlier, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 in Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, on Monday morning, that caused minor damage on Siberut Island.
The epicenter was reported to be at 0.99 degrees southern latitude and 98.53 degrees eastern longitude, some 161 kilometers northwest of Mentawai Islands, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
Furthermore, Muhari said that the residents of Mentawai Islands District felt the earthquake tremors strongly for about three to five seconds.
The areas that also felt the earthquake tremors were North Siberut, Tuapejat, Painan, Padang, Padang Panjang, Bukittinggi, Solok, and South Solok.
According to Muhari, residents must pay attention to the position of large items in the house so as not to hinder the evacuation process.
