Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - West Java Province has emerged as the overall champion at the 2022 National Student Sports Olympiad (O2SN) by bagging a total of nine gold, four silver, and five bronze medals.

The 2022 O2SN was held on September 4-9, 2022, for students of elementary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools, vocational schools, madrasahs (Islamic schools), and special schools.

"Alhamdulillah (thank God), after quite a long time, we have waited for this achievement for six years. In the era of Governor Ridwan Kamil and Deputy Governor Uu Ruzhanul Ulum, West Java finally emerged as the overall champion of O2SN," Head of the Education Office of West Java Dedi Supandi stated here on Saturday.

Earlier, West Java also emerged as the O2SN overall champion in 2016 when the province had hosted the event.

Supandi expressed optimism that in accordance with this year's 02SN theme of "Recover Faster, Rise Stronger, Achieve Greater," the success achieved by athletes from West Java must not only be maintained but continue to be developed, so that they can excel in international events.

"In future, I really hope that excellent generations in the field of sports would continue to emerge from West Java," he stated.

At O2SN, students compete in pencak silat, the traditional Indonesian martial art, and karate for students of elementary, junior, and senior high school levels, as well as shot put, bocce, table tennis, badminton, basketball, wheelchair racing, and long jump for special school students.

The medals tally at the 2022 O2SN reached 50 comprising 17 gold medals, 13 silver medals, and 20 bronze medals.

"We convey our gratitude to the contingent that includes athletes, coaches, and assistants from West Java that have worked hard from the selection stage in cities and districts," Supandi stated.

He reminded West Java's students, who have won medals at O2SN, to continue to develop their talent and to not become complacent, and those who failed to bag a medal to not become discouraged and continue to hone their skills.
