They are our joint effort to make the G20 Summit safe from FMD.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is implementing strict policies regarding the transport and sale of cattle farming products to make the G20 Summit—which will be held in Bali province on November 15–16, 2022—a success.

Coordinator of the expert team of the task force for the handling of foot and mouth disease (FMD), Wiku Adisasmito, made the remarks at a press conference on the development of FMD handling as of September 20, here.

The transport of cattle that are prone to the disease from and to all districts and cities of Bali has been prohibited, he informed. However, an exception has been made for pigs, which have been allowed to be sold to regions outside the province.

Furthermore, the vaccine requirement for transported pigs has also been revoked.

Meanwhile, regarding fresh animal products, the only commodity that has been allowed to enter the province is premium meat that meets the task force’s regulations.

In addition to tightening the transport of commodities, the task force as well as the Balinese government and community are striving to vaccinate cattle against FMD in the region.

The government is trying to accelerate and expand the coverage of the national FMD vaccination to 80 percent -- in accordance with the recommendations of the World Animal Health Organization (WOAH) -- by the end of October 2022, Adisasmito said.

“In addition, surveillance will be carried out regularly. They are our joint effort to make the G20 Summit safe from FMD," he added.

He said he expects the acceleration of FMD handling efforts in Bali province to also be carried out in other provinces.

The type of FMD vaccine used to curb FMD transmission in Indonesia is Aftopor, originating from France, Adisasmito informed. Indonesia has also received one million doses of the monovalent Aphthogen Oleo vaccine from the Australian government.

The handling of FMD in Indonesia has involved various pentahelix parties, such as veterinarians as well as military and police personnel, so that it can be implemented faster, more precisely, and it can be made more measurable, he added.

According to data received from the task force here on Tuesday, 2,666,637 cattle have been vaccinated against the disease so far.
