Human trafficking is an extraordinary crime so it must be settled comprehensively, from upstream down to downstream.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Consulate General in Doha, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), recently provided technical guidance on the identification of human trafficking victims to Indonesian representatives in the Middle East.

The technical guidance featured several speakers, including the fourth deputy of the Coordinating Human Development and Culture Ministry, Secretary General of the Witness and Victim Protection Institution (LPSK), and representatives from the Attorney General's Office, IOM-Egypt, and ILO-Qatar.

A total of 14 Indonesian representatives posted in the Middle East took part in the technical guidance held on September 19 and 20, 2022, the Indonesian Consulate General in Doha said in a written statement released on Wednesday.

In his opening address at the technical guidance session, Director General of Protocol and Consular Affairs at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry Andy Rachmianto said that protection diplomacy is currently one of the priorities of Indonesian foreign policy.

To support protection efforts, there is a need to strengthen the capacity of Indonesian representatives as first responders to human trafficking cases abroad.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar, Ridwan Hassan, underscored the significance of integrated efforts for handling human trafficking cases.

"Human trafficking is an extraordinary crime so it must be settled comprehensively, from upstream down to downstream," he said.

Through the technical guidance, Indonesian representatives and officials were expected to improve their capability to identify Indonesian citizens who have fallen victim to human trafficking as well as protect their rights, in accordance with the regulations in placement countries and Indonesia, and refer the cases to the relevant institution or agency.
