North Tapanuli, N Sumatra (ANTARA) - The North Tapanuli District Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), North Sumatra, continues to gather data on victims and damages to buildings and public facilities following a 5.8-M earthquake that hit the region on Saturday morning.

Acting Chief of North Tapanuli BPBD Bonggas Pasaribu stated here on Saturday that one died, while several people were injured in addition to damage caused to some residential buildings and public facilities.

Pasaribu told ANTARA that the earthquake triggered a fire in small stores, caused landslides, and damaged roads in addition to wrecking residents' homes and a local church HKBP Tarutung Kota in Tarutung City.

"At least 50-60 meters of the road to the Salib Kasih tourist area is covered with three-meter-high landslide materials," he revealed.

Meanwhile, he noted that the district government had deployed heavy equipment to clear landslide materials in the Salib Kasih tourist area.

Moreover, he reported that the earthquake caused damage to around one hundred meters of road sections in Simorangkir Village, Siatasbarita Sub-District, as well as one hundred meters of road sections in Hutapea Banuarea Village, Tarutung Sub-District.

"Currently, we are still collecting data on the damage caused by the earthquake," he stated.

Meanwhile, North Tapanuli Secretary Indra Sahat Hottua Simaremare confirmed the death of one person, injuries to nine people, and 18 stalls in Sarulla Market been engulfed by fire.

"Seven of the injured victims are undergoing intensive treatment at Tarutung Regional Hospital, while two other people are being treated at a local health center," Simaremare stated.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was shallow and occurred due to the activity of the Great Sumatran Fault in the Renun segment.

Furthermore, North Sumatra Police Chief Inspector General RZ Panca Putra Simanjuntak had decided to fly to North Tapanuli to check the conditions of North Tapanuli's residents and at the same time provide health assistance to the injured.
