Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection laid emphasis on the need to offer immediate treatment to child sexual violence victims to prevent them from experiencing mental disorders.

"They should be treated quick. If not, the impact would not be what we expect," Child Special Protection Deputy at the Ministry Nahar told Antara here on Wednesday.

Sexual violence that leaves a scarring trauma on victims can lead to them suffering from mental issues, especially if they are left untreated or if their physical and mental conditions are not handled immediately, he explained.

"After being raped, a child's mental condition will become unstable. If this is untreated, and if there is no effort to recover their mental health, then they pass the six months phase," he noted.

"That is difficult to be rehabilitated," he stated.

Four methods to facilitate recovery of victims of sexual violence comprise physical, mental, and social medication and/or rehabilitation as well as prevention of mental disease and disorder.

The second method involves psychosocial assistance, starting from medication to recovery. The third involves meeting children's nutritional and other needs. The fourth concerns providing protection and assistance in every trial process.

Children cannot be examined and then testify without protection and assistance since their past trauma can emerge. This will cause officials to encounter children in an unexpected situation, he explained.

Quick assistance and handling, starting from medication to recovery rehabilitation, is the rights of sexual violence victims that must be fulfilled, Nahar stressed.

Earlier, here on Tuesday, Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection I Gusti Ayu Bintang Puspayoga urged citizens to report domestic violence to the police or complaint service provided by the government.
