Lumajang, Jawa Timur (ANTARA) - As many as 115 families, or 315 people, took refuge after floods struck Purorejo Village, Lumajang District, East Java, according to the Lumajang District Disaster Mitigation Board (BPBD).

Heavy rains that lashed the village caused Glidik River to overflow its bank, chief of the BPBD emergency rehabilitation and reconstruction section Joko Sambang noted on Tuesday.

As a result, houses and plantations in the village were flooded from Monday to Tuesday, he remarked.

"The residents fled their flooded houses and sought refuge in several houses that were unaffected by the floodwaters in several areas," he added.

Flood also hit Bulurejo, Tempursari Sub-district, Lumajang District, and affected 298 families.

Heavy rains also caused a landslide in Purorejo Village and affected three houses. The owners of the affected houses are taking refuge at their relatives' houses.

Landslides also hit Pundungsari Village, Tempursari Sub-district and Argosari Village, Senduro Sub-district, Lumajang District, due to heavy rains in Lumajang.

"No fatalities were reported in the floods and landslides in Lumajang District. The quick reaction team of BPBD Lumajang District is still assessing (the impact of the disaster) along with village apparatuses," he remarked.

Sambang called on local residents, especially those living in vulnerable sub-districts in Lumajang, to go on standby and remain vigilant over the extreme weather that may cause natural disaster at any time.
