"We, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, conducted strict selection in selecting the outfits to be showcased at Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week 2023," Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Anwar Makarim informed during the JMFW 2023 in Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday.
Makarim said that his ministry carried out strict curation by involving academies and qualified practitioners in the field of fashion.
The 60 selected looks showcased at the event were the works of students of vocational schools and vocational higher education institutions. In addition, there were also special entries from the course and training institutions.
“Vocational human resources have the capability to compete in the fashion sector in the world. Of course, we want more (people to be) involved. With various breakthroughs, we continue to improve vocational human resources with various other superior (programs) such as the Vocational Center of Excellence and the Vocational Kampus Merdeka (Freedom in Campus)," he explained.
Director General of Vocational Education at the ministry Kiki Yuliati said that the involvement of vocational education institutions in the event was part of efforts to support Indonesia's recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Currently, there are 1,130 skill competencies and 15 vocational higher education institutions that offer fashion study programs. The ministry is also conducting applied research to advance the development of fashion.
Meanwhile, acting director for partnership and alignment of business and industry at the ministry's Directorate General of Vocational Education, Saryadi, said that two vocational higher education institutions showcased the results of applied research—the Christian University of Maranatha with Lasem Batik and the Creative Media State Polytechnic with fashion products made from mask waste.
