Jakarta (ANTARA) - Mount Anak Krakatau in Punduh Pedada sub-district, South Lampung district, Lampung province, has erupted several times since Monday (October 24, 2022), the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) reported on Tuesday.

An officer from the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post, Anwar Mucklisin, said that the volcano spewed plumes of smoke up to a height of 150 meters at 9:56 a.m. Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB) on Tuesday morning.

"The thick grey eruption column was observed leaning toward the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 42 millimeters and a duration of approximately 25 seconds. There was no loud eruption sound," he informed in a statement received on Tuesday.

According to PVMBG’s site, earlier, Mount Anak Krakatau ejected a 200-meter column of black smoke toward the northeast at 7:27 a.m. WIB on Tuesday.

The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 50 millimeters and a duration of 21 seconds.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the volcano reportedly spewed columns of smoke up to a height of 150 meters twice at 5:57 p.m. WIB and 9:11 p.m. WIB.

A thick black column was reported to lean toward the northeast during the first eruption. The eruption was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters and a duration of 32 seconds.

Meanwhile, the second eruption spewed a thick grey-to-black column toward the east. The eruption had a maximum amplitude of 44 millimeters and a duration of 47 seconds.

Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Level III or ‘alert’ status along with Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, Mount Merapi on the border of the provinces of Yogyakarta and Central Java, as well as Mount Semeru in East Java province.

PVMBG has recommended that the local community, tourists, and climbers do not undertake any activities within a five-kilometer radius of the crater of Mount Anak Krakatau.
