Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy chairperson of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat has expressed the need to consistently uphold the spirit and values of the Youth Pledge to form a strong national character among youth.

"Learning from the 1928 Youth Pledge incident, which gave birth to ideas from young people to realize independence, today's young generation must be able to play an active role in determining the direction of national development," Moerdijat said in a statement received here on Friday.

According to her, strong national values must be instilled in the youth from an early age so that they become the foundation of their thought processes in their daily lives when they join society.

She said she believes that from an early age, young people must be encouraged to come up with constructive and critical ideas for overcoming various national problems.

"Moreover, Statistics Indonesia in 2021 revealed that the number of youth in Indonesia was recorded at 64.92 million or 23.90 percent of the total population of Indonesia," she highlighted.

It is hoped that the youth will help determine the direction of the nation's development for the better given their significant number, she said.

The idea of the Youth Pledge in 1928, which led to Indonesia’s independence, was initiated by youths who were students and college students, she added.

"Now is the right moment for the youth and (everyone) to contribute in an effort to help offer solutions to various problems gripping the nation," she remarked.

She said that the youth's technological prowess must be honed and harnessed as well as possible to create unity and a strong national cultural character.

She also deemed strong collaboration between stakeholders and the community as necessary so that the national values enshrined in the Youth Pledge can be understood and lived by all citizens.

Moerdijat said she is confident that with the instilling of strong national values in the youth, the development of the Indonesian nation will be better in the future.
