Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Wednesday received a visit from a delegation led by Boeing International president Michael Arthur at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta.

Boeing is Indonesia's strategic partner in the aviation industry, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said after accompanying President Widodo to the meeting.

"The Boeing president stated that Indonesia, which has many islands and cities, is an important country for the aviation industry. Therefore, Boeing is very interested (in developing the industry) and will always give support to Indonesia. Of course, the support can be realized through concrete policies," he informed at Merdeka Palace here.

The meeting also discussed a scheme for aircraft needs, he said adding that the Transportation Ministry will hold a special session on the aviation industry during the G20 Summit in Bali this month.

"There is a shortage (of aircraft) as a result of demand that exceeds supply. This means that there must be additional supply of aircraft," he said.

Boeing will think of schemes to deal with the shortage, he added.

"During the G20 Summit in Bali, as the Transportation Minister, I will hold a special session on the aviation industry (to discuss) how to improve the capacity of Indonesian aviation in order to serve the public needs as a whole," Sumadi said.

At the meeting on Wednesday, President Widodo stressed the importance of strategic collaboration and cooperation between Boeing and the relevant parties in Indonesia, he informed.

“Mr. President also underscored the importance of Boeing collaborating with stakeholders in Indonesia such as PTDI (PT Dirgantara Indonesia). There has been an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with PTDI to make construction design and supply (goods) to Boeing. We hope the value will reach close to Rp1 trillion," he said.
