Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Infobmkg application has been updated as part of efforts to optimize the convening of the G20 Leaders Summit, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has said.

"The new innovation in the form of the Infobmkg G20 application is a part of the effort to optimize the 2022 Indonesian Presidency of the G20 Summit," the minister said at an online press conference on the launch of the new version and update of the Infobmkg application and the Multi-hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS) application here on Monday.

According to him, the innovations carried out by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) are in line with the directive of President Joko Widodo to tap into all the potential that Indonesia has in order to facilitate the G20 Summit in Bali.

He said that the development of a multi-disaster early warning system by the agency is also in accordance with one of the recommendations made during the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) session in Bali, which sought the development of an early warning system to ensure that everyone is protected from multi-hazard risks for the next five years.

The impact of global climate change is apparent in many sectors in Indonesia and could compromise the national development agenda, thus it is very important to take strategic measures in terms of mitigation adaptation, he added.

According to data from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, 5,402 natural disasters were recorded in Indonesia in 2021, 99.5 percent of which were hydrometeorological disasters, such as floods and extreme weather events, he noted.

"The role played by the BMKG through the services offered is a crucial support for activities and planning for sectors that are potentially impacted by climate change and disasters," he said.

Therefore, excellent weather, earthquake, and tsunami information services must be provided by BMKG to support efforts toward disaster risk reduction, improving community welfare, and ensuring sustainable development.

He urged the BMKG to involve stakeholders, including the academia and the private sector, to offer relevant services that are beneficial for the public and user partners.

"BMKG information services must be fast, precise, and accurate and easy to understand by users," he added.
