Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) has conferred an award to the Mayor of Tasikmalaya Muhammad Yusuf for his contribution to efforts to prevent and eradicate terrorism in his area.

“The BNPT is pleased with the responsive local government,” head of the agency, Chief Commissioner General Boy Rafli Amar, said in a written statement received here on Monday.

According to Amar, the agency has been truly assisted in its efforts to educate people on terrorism prevention thanks to the mayor's responsive actions.

Following the issuance of Presidential Regulation Number 7 of 2021, regional governments are expected to carry out terrorism prevention measures.

Regional governments have a crucial role in preventing terrorism, especially after the signing of the presidential decree on the national action plan for preventing and countering violent extremism leading toward terrorism (RAN PE) by President Joko Widodo in 2021, he noted.

He said that he expects the award to motivate other regions to be proactive in preventing intolerance, radicalism, and terrorism.

Meanwhile, Tasikmalaya Mayor Yusuf said that the regional government has provided assistance and guidance to individuals who were involved in terrorism.

The regional government and the West Java Terrorism Prevention Coordination Forum (FKPT) have also worked to actively prevent radicalism and terrorism based on the Pesantren Regional Regulation.

Yusuf said he is optimistic that efforts to prevent intolerance, radicalism, and terrorism in Tasikmalaya would lead to the building of a harmonious and tolerant religious life.

"This is a motivation and innovation so that they can empower them (people or groups who have been involved in terrorism) more effectively, contribute actively to prevent intolerance, radicalism, and terrorism," he added.

According to him, the helping hand by the regional government has had a positive and profound impact, with former terror convicts, who are currently members of the Anshaul Islam Tasikmalaya Foundation, participating in educating the younger generation to prevent them from being affected by radicalism and terrorism.
