Jakarta (ANTARA) - Educational institutions at all levels must be safe places that are free from bullying for students, so they can study and form character optimally, according to the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

"Educational institutions at the primary, secondary, and higher education (levels) should be a safe place for students for them to gain knowledge and imbibe good character values," Head of BRIN Laksana Tri Handoko stated during the “Development Talk Series IX: Building Friendly and Characterful Education Towards 2045 Golden Indonesia” here on Tuesday.

Based on a survey on learning environment conducted by the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry in 2021, at least 24.4 percent of students are vulnerable to bullying in educational units.

Hence, Handoko said, efforts to prevent bullying should be a matter of concern for all parties.

“This (should be) our concern. In the first semester of 2022, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) recorded several cases of violence, in the form of bullying and physical violence. These cases involved both educators and fellow students," he remarked.

He said bullying and violence that occurred in education units posed barriers in building sociable and character-centric education towards realizing Golden Indonesia 2045.

Hence, all stakeholders, such as educational institutions, government, academicians, schools, and the community, should synergize to create a friendly educational environment to realize the nation’s quality generation.

He expected that best examples and solutions to problems in the world of education can serve as inputs to produce strategic policies for friendly and character-focused education towards 2045 Golden Indonesia.

Earlier, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) had urged the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology to increase the systematic dissemination of information regarding bullying prevention in schools.

One of the lawful guidelines in preventing violence in educational units is Ministerial Regulation No. 82 of 2015.
