"World Diabetes Day reminds people to actively do physical activities," deputy for the coordination of health quality improvement and population development at the ministry, Agus Suprapto, said here on Monday.
Routine physical activity and exercising at least 15–30 minutes daily, five days a week, can help prevent many diseases, including diabetes, he explained.
"Physical activity and regular exercise are very important for an individual to prevent diabetes," he said.
Diabetes can be a cause of other diseases so the risk factors need to be avoided, he added.
"Diabetes can be a cause of various diseases, so it is necessary to regularly do physical exercise to help reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus," he said.
In addition, people need to pay attention to their calorie intake based on their daily needs.
"To reduce the risk of diabetes, people need to maintain a diet, control their minds so that they are not stressed, and fix a sleep pattern," he said.

Meanwhile, the ministry is playing an active role in disseminating information about the importance of preventing diabetes to the community, Suprapto said.
According to him, the government is intensifying the Healthy Community Movement (Germas) campaign, in accordance with Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 2017 concerning the movement for the community's healthy living.
The campaign aims to encourage people to prioritize a paradigm that helps promote good health and prevent diseases.
"The Healthy Community Movement implementation is the main key to preventing various health problems, for example, preventing heart disease, stroke, obesity, and diabetes," Suprapto said.
To encourage people to live a healthy life, the movement is educating the public about undertaking regular exercise, consuming fruits and vegetables, not smoking, not consuming alcoholic beverages, conducting regular health checks, maintaining cleanliness, and using latrines while defecating.
