Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA) - Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga appealed to all parties to promote the sexual violence crime law (UU TPKS) stronger to prevent sexual violence in children.

“This is our common task if we do not want the UU TPKS, which has gone through a long process, our long struggle, only to become a document,” the minister stated at the Follow-Up Activity for Handling Children in Need of Special Protection here on Friday.

Puspayoga noted that after the UU TPKS was ratified on April 12, 2022, reports of sexual violence emerged one by one. The trend of sexual violence case reports had earlier started to surface since 2020.

According to the minister, sexual violence is an iceberg phenomenon, thereby translating to the fact that many more cases that have occurred were yet to be revealed.

Puspayoga noted that stronger promotion of the UU TPKS could encourage several victims to speak up and save each other.

The law is deemed as a comprehensive law that is in the best interest of the victims, not only in prevention and handling but also empowerment that can show the causes of related issues.

She expressed optimism that all ministries and agencies, including law enforcers and regional governments, would simultaneously disseminate information about UU TPKS to the community.

The minister is sanguine about the Office Technical Implementation Units (UPTD), under the ministry and regional governments, working together to provide the best assistance to victims. The UPTD must continue to be encouraged in accordance with the mandate of the law to provide justice to victims and have a deterrent effect on perpetrators.

“It becomes our task in the ministry to disseminate this more intensively,” she remarked.

Issues on humanity should not be ignored and be immediately tackled together with other relevant institutions, she affirmed.
