Cianjur, West Java (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology acted quickly to assist teachers and students affected by the 5.6-magnitude earthquake in Cianjur, West Java, on Monday (November 21, 2022), Minister Nadiem Makarim said.

"Just a few hours after the disaster, we promptly delivered various assistance," Makarim informed during his visit to the Cianjur District Education Office, West Java, on Wednesday.

The assistance consisted of 34 emergency tents for makeshift classes and 20 tents for other purposes, 185 emergency packages for families, 800 study kits, and 200 folding tables and educational toys for students of early-age education institutions, the minister expounded.

Other assistance provided for students and teachers in Cianjur district included books, basic foods, and medicines, he added.

"Moreover, emergency education services were made available at the Cianjur Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports Office," Makarim said.

While expressing the hope that the assistance would alleviate the difficulties faced by Cianjur residents, he assured that the ministry will continue supplying assistance packages, particularly for employees under the ministry’s auspices.

Assistance and support for Cianjur students and teachers will be distributed promptly to bolster recovery, he said.

"Let us pray and continue working together and helping each other for Cianjur's recovery," the minister added.

Earlier, the minister visited PGRI Cugenang Kindergarten, Cugenang Primary School, and Cianjur Senior High School No. 2, which were damaged in Monday’s earthquake.

"May our brothers and sisters who passed away (in the disaster) be placed in an honorable position by the Almighty God, and we hope all injured victims recover soon," Makarim said

No deaths were recorded at the three schools: There were no school activities at PGRI Cugenang Kindergarten and Cugenang Primary School during the quake, and all students of Cianjur Senior High School No. 2 survived the quake despite their school building collapsing.

However, three Cugenang Primary School students and two PGRI Cugenang Kindergarten pupils died in the disaster, according to the respective school's principals.
