Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) Puan Maharani has urged the government and law enforcement agencies to coordinate and ensure a conducive situation during the Christmas and New Year holidays.



"The government, together with the national police (Polri) and the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI), must create a conducive, safe, and peaceful situation for the people while celebrating Christmas and New Year," she said while delivering her speech during a plenary meeting at the Senayan Parliament Complex here on Thursday.

She also asked the related stakeholders to maintain traffic safety during the Christmas and New Year holidays as public mobility will be high.



"There will be millions of people traveling during the 2022 Christmas and 2023 New Year holidays, starting with the third week of December," she added.



In addition, Maharani reminded the government to utilize various measures to control the prices of basic necessities, which are feared to increase toward the end of 2023.



"I also remind the government to control the prices of basic commodities ahead of Christmas and New Year because, usually, due to holidays, there will be a spike in the price of basic commodities," she said.

Moreover, the House Speaker asked people who are planning to travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays on public and private transportation to comply with the rules during their trip.



"Be patient if there is congestion on the roads or build-up at airports or stations because the interest in traveling this December seems to be increasing," she said.



For this reason, she also invited all elements of society to increase their sense of solidarity and refrain from getting angry, which could disrupt the Christmas and New Year celebrations.



"We must be able to realize mutual cooperation to create a conducive and safe situation," she added.
