Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) expressed optimism that Admiral Yudo Margono would strengthen the Indonesian military's (TNI's) performance in protecting the nation, as he was approved by the House to serve as TNI commander.

"(It is expected that the new TNI commander can) carry out his duties according to the mandate as well as strengthen and protect the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia as well as possible," Speaker of DPR RI Puan Maharani noted here on Tuesday.

Apart from the improvement of the TNI, Maharani expected that Margono’s good performance in leading the military would also have a positive impact on the future of all Indonesians.

"(It is) because, certainly, the new TNI commander will have a lot of tasks -- not only to continue various programs that have been implemented but also to improve and strengthen the programs," the house speaker remarked.

After obtaining approval from the House, she affirmed that the new TNI commander would be inaugurated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).

"God willing, after today’s approval, we are just waiting for the inauguration to be conducted by President Jokowi," she noted.

Meanwhile, regarding the appointment of the new navy chief of staff, whose position was earlier held by Admiral Yudo Margono, Maharani emphasized that it is the president’s prerogative.

"It (the appointment) may be conducted after the inauguration of the (new) TNI commander or coincided with the inauguration of the new TNI Commander, so we still have to wait," she stated.

On the same occasion, Margono expressed his gratitude to the DPR RI for their approval to appoint him as the new military commander.

"Certainly, I will carry out the duties as the TNI commander with full sense of responsibility according to the expectations of the community," he remarked.

Earlier, all members and faction representatives attending the Plenary Meeting of the DPR RI at the Parliament Complex, here, on Tuesday agreed to designate Admiral Yudo Margono, who were proposed by Jokowi to the House, as the new military commander.
