There are four (meteorology) phenomena that are occurring simultaneously that are feared to potentially cause extreme weather in various regions of Indonesia, especially in the southern, central, and eastern parts of Indonesia.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati urged people in several provinces to be vigilant for the potential for extreme weather ahead of the 2022 Christmas and 2023 New Year holidays.

"There are four (meteorology) phenomena that are occurring simultaneously that are feared to potentially cause extreme weather in various regions of Indonesia, especially in the southern, central, and eastern parts of Indonesia," Karnawati noted at a virtual press conference on Tuesday evening.

The phenomena included the Asian Monsoon, Asian Cold Surge, Madden-Julian Oscillation, as well as the development of low-pressure areas in the southern waters of Indonesia, she noted.

Karnawati remarked that 12 provinces -- Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, West Java, Central Java, East Java, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, Maluku, and Papua -- should stay alert to the potential of extreme weather events on December 21-23, 2022.

Meanwhile, the BMKG head called to watch out for the potential for extreme weather on December 24, 2022, in the provinces of Central Java, East Java, and South Sulawesi.

Furthermore, some provinces should be prepared for the potential for heavy to very heavy downpour on December 25, 2022, to January 1, 2023, she noted.

Karnawati remarked that those provinces comprised Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), NTT, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and Maluku.

Meanwhile, during the same period, moderate to heavy rains may fall in the provinces of Aceh, Lampung, South Sumatra, Jakarta, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, North Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.

Karnawati noted that detailed impact-based forecasting information down to the sub-district level could be accessed on the website: signature.bmkg.go.id.

Taking into account the potential for extreme weather, she urged all stakeholders to make various preparations, including by ensuring that water resources infrastructure capacity and management systems are ready to anticipate the increased rainfall.

Furthermore, the BMKG suggested the local governments to increase coordination between related parties on hydrometrological disaster preparedness and implement a more massive reforestation program.

In addition, the public is urged to trim fragile tree branches, frequently monitor BMKG’s information on weather developments and extreme weather early warnings, not litter, as well as not excessively conduct logging of trees.

The BMKG head also called on ferry passengers to increase vigilance to the potential for extreme weather that may cause high sea waves.
